Introduction
The excerpt ‘You have put up a show’ of Namdev is a poem about the mighty role of god. This world is a magic show which is created and controlled by the supreme power, i.e., God. This thought belongs to the theistic school of philosophy. It is often advocated by Vaishanavism, and the Bhagwat Purana specifically mentions God as the puppeteer who controls everything.
Central Idea
The poem revolves around the idea that the world is maya, or more specifically, it is a magic show run by God. Namdev, the poet, admires the person who is not caught in it. God is the supreme being who acts as the puppeteer, and he controls everything. People ignore this reality and cling their mind to the shows of birth and death. The poet seeks the shelter of God and wants him to end our birth and death cycle.
Themes
a) The world is an illusion – The main theme of the poem is that this world is like a magic show, which is full of surprises and shocking things and lacks truth. Hence, it is pertinent to say that it is fake and only acts to cling to our mind to its birth and death cycle. Hence, the poet states that he likes that person who does not heed the charm of this world and focuses on the ultimate goal of seeking shelter of the supreme God.
b) God as puppeteer – God is the supreme authority governing all creation. He is the puppeteer who runs this world through his strings, and we are mere puppets. This is the ultimate reality that we can get rid of the birth and death cycle by seeking his shelter.
Figure of Speech
a) Alliteration – ‘seek your shelter’ has repetition of /s/ consonant sound at the start of words, hence, it is a case of alliteration.
b) Metaphor – God is presented as a puppeteer, as he controls the show going on in this world as a puppeteer controls all the puppets in a puppet show.
c) Enjambment – In the following lines, Enjambment is used-
I like the man
who is not taken in.
The first line continues in the following line, hence it is an example of enjambment.
Indian Theistic Philosophy
This poem highlights thoughts of Vaishanavism, some parts of Vedanta and the Bhagwat Gita too. The belief that God runs everything and is the supreme one highlights the main principle of the theistic school of Indian philosophy.
Structure and Rhyme Scheme
There is no concrete structure in the poem, and it does not have any rhyme scheme either.
